Andrea Pascal's Wunderkammer (2020)
The work Wunderkammer, presented under the pseudonym of the fictional artist “Andrea Pascal”, is a research project around pornography, visual art and the pharmacopornographic cycles of production and consumption that lie beneath it. The work includes a series of painting commissioned to a painter and presented as Pascal’s work, whose images are actual paintings that are used to decorate the sets of pornographic films and videos.
The texts accompanying the installation (performed live as a reading) explore through a series of vignettes the life of the images presented in the installation. What is found is a network of connections between art history, capitalism, drugs, anxiety and multinational companies, among others.
Finally, a poster collects all the other paintings that were not reproduced and shown as paintings again in the installation, plus a number of IKEA objects, whose standardized, mass produced paintings and photographs can be often found on the sets of pornography.
Exhibition view and reading performance at KABK 2020 Graduation Show (Den Haag, NL).
